Aristotle' s Concept
2. Aristotle gives definition of Tragedy in his work 'Poetics'. Hello wrote about Six elements of tragedy
According to him,
'Tragedy than is an imitation of an
action which is serious, complete
and of certain mas.'
The action which is serious and tragic which can't be perform without tragic hero. It is not the capacity of funny character to perform high and noble. So Aristotle offers the sketch of Tragic Hero.
* Characteristics of Tragic Hero
1. The function of tragedy is to evoke pity and fear. The character of tragic hero which successfully arises the feeling of pain and suffering.The downfall of a wicked person,the feeling of pity and fear fail to arouse.
* For Example:
In Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice ', Shylock suffer in the end of the play .
2. According to Aristotle Too good character can also not be a tragic hero in tragedy. Because pain and suffering arise from a weakness where as perfect character can not give tragic possibility.
*For Example:
Jesus Christ never did any wrong deed.He never fall. Sorry, There is no possibility to call such character as tragic hero.In other words, Completely good character is disqualified to become a tragic hero.
3. Tragic heros are always either king or prince or warrior sometimes tragis hero is man of high rank.
For Example:
Shakespeare's ' Hamlet' is a prince of Denmark .
Aristotle says that there is no tragedy possible in silly mistake of person. Tragedy lies in serious mistake of tragic hero. Even situation becomes more worst when he comes to know about his mistake.Thus, These are major characteristics of Tragic Hero according to Aristotle .
4. Yes , I studied tragedy during my
B.A program. In tragedy of William Shakespeare's 'Macbeth ', The tragic hero is Macbeth.He is the protagonist of the tragedy .
Then another one is 'Jew of Malta'by Christopher Marlowe.Here the protagonist is Barabas. In both the play there are concept of ' Hamartia'.
In the Macbeth and Jew of Malta both are tragic play depict concept of 'Hamartia' at the downfall of tragic hero.
